Where’s the Gong Martin?
Those of you who are from the UK, will be aware that an
important part of the British system is the Honours system, whereby the Prime
Minister of the Day either directly or via the Queen bestows various honours on
the Great and the Good known colloquially a Gongs. These start off with the MBE, then if you are
a really serious do gooder like say, for example Jimmy Savile you might get an
OBE. If you are willing to advertise dog food such as say Clement Freud you
might even get a KBE and get to call yourself Sir like his chums Cyril Smith
and Jimmy Saville.
As in so many things in the Maddie case besides the things
that did happen, we also need to look at the things that should have happened
but didn’t. So, besides the promotions
of mediocrities such as John Lowe (at the FSS) and Stuart Prior of the LP (who
went on to be appointed Assistant Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire police),
we need to question the treatment of the good guys such as Martin Grime. Surely Grime might be a popular candidate for
such an honour? 10 years of service with
the British Army followed by 22 years with the South Yorkshire Police, then
setting up his own firm, recognized as one of the world’s leaders in the field
of Police Dog training and canine forensic searches. Helping solve a string of high-profile cases
and finally de facto cracking the most high-profile of all British Missing
Person’s cases. Yet it seems to be all
quiet on the gong front at Chez Grime.
Is that yet another coincidence or further evidence of the way the
cookie crumbles back in Blighty?
